Description

As a society, we naturally romanticise professional sport. The bright lights, big money contracts, game winners and championship celebrations. What's not to love? Professional athletes are seen as celebrities, living the good life being able to travel the world playing a game they love, but what really goes into the life of a full time athlete? And how does it look when the lights go out?

Ryan Broekhoff is well aware of all that the professional athlete lifestyle consists of, spending time playing basketball in the US College system, professionally in Turkey and Russia before reaching every little boy's dream of playing in the NBA, "Rowdy" has experienced plenty more than most. But it has been far from the Hollywood story that most of us assume is played out by these athletes. The constant travel, uncertainty of playing contracts, dealing with injury and adding family stress into the mix provides the perfect setting for anxiety to thrive.

Today, Rowdy and I discuss his background, the escape basketball provided for him growing up and how his decision to seek professional help allowed him to confront the traumas of his childhood and become a better father, husband and teammate. Along with this, we explore what it takes to make it as a professional athlete and how many kids today might not quite understand what is truly required.

My biggest take away from our conversation however, is the importance of speaking up and seeking help. We are not alone in this world and its vital to be aware enough within yourself to understand when the cloud of self doubt, anxiety or depression starts to creep in. And when it does, finding a way to talk about it can help significantly.

Raw, emotional and confronting, Ryan's story is one we should all listen to. A great basketball player, and an even better person, Rowdy's desire to use his story as an opportunity to help others navigate the struggles of life is truly special. I'm grateful to be able to have sat down with him and hope those of you who listen can take plenty of value from it.
